Scout tells you when something needs your attention, such as a new job application or a finished resume upload. You can read these in the bell in the header, choose which ones you receive, turn on desktop alerts for your browser, and mute individual projects. Product updates (What’s new) are published separately from the bell.

Before you start

  • You need to be signed in to Scout.
  • Desktop alerts need a browser that supports notifications. If they are not available yet, the settings tell you “Desktop alerts are not available yet” and everything still appears in Scout.
  • What’s new only appears in the header when product updates are available to you.

Steps

OPEN your notification inbox

  1. Click the bell icon in the header. Its label is Notifications, and it reads “Notifications, N unread” when there are unread items. The badge shows the unread count, capped with a plus sign for large numbers.
  2. The panel is titled Updates. Each row has a title, a short message and how long ago it arrived. Unread rows have a dot and the word “Unread”.
  3. Click a row to open it. Scout takes you to the page the notification points to. If the link is no longer valid you will see “This notification is not available”.
  4. Click Load older at the bottom to see earlier notifications.

Opening the bell does not mark anything as viewed. A row counts as viewed once you have seen it in the panel.

Icons at the top of the panel:

Icon Tooltip What it does
Double check Mark all as viewed Marks everything as viewed. Disabled when nothing is unread.
Bin Clear viewed After you confirm Clear viewed notifications?, removes viewed items from the list. Nothing is deleted and unread items are kept.
Cog Desktop alert settings Opens Settings > General at the notification settings.

With no items you will see “You have no notifications.”

CHOOSE which notifications you get

  1. Open Settings > General (or click the cog in the bell panel).
  2. Find the Notifications card. It says “Choose where Scout reaches you and which updates you receive.”
  3. Under Notification types, each type has two switches:
    • In Scout - saves the notification to your inbox.
    • Desktop - also sends a desktop alert. This switch needs In Scout to be on for that type, and it is only active once desktop alerts are on for this browser (see the next section).
  4. The types you can set are:
Type When you are notified
New job application A candidate applies to one of your jobs.
Client moved a candidate A client moves a candidate between shared job stages.
Client added a candidate note A client adds a note to a candidate in a shared job.
Resume upload failed Scout cannot process a resume upload.
Resume upload completed with warnings An upload finishes with skipped or failed files.
Resume upload completed A resume upload finishes successfully.
Scout announcements Important product and account updates from Scout.
Interview Prep ready A candidate’s Interview Prep document finishes generating.

A status badge on the card shows On, Off, Blocked, Unavailable or Checking for desktop alerts in this browser.

Settings > General also has an Integration Notifications card (“Choose which integration alerts you want to receive”) with switches for ATS Integrations, Engagement email integration, Career Mailbox integration and Scout Chrome extension.

TURN ON desktop alerts

  1. In Settings > General > Notifications, find This browser (“Receive Windows, macOS, or Linux alerts while Scout is in the background”).
  2. Click Turn on. Your browser asks for permission. Click Allow.
  3. The text changes to “Desktop alerts are on”. Now the Desktop switches work.
  4. To stop, click Turn off and confirm Turn off desktop alerts?. This browser stops receiving alerts and your Scout inbox still shows everything.

If the browser has blocked notifications you will see “Notifications are blocked”. Allow notifications for Scout in your browser settings, then reload the page. If the browser does not support them you will see “Desktop alerts are not supported here”.

MANAGE connected browsers

When desktop alerts are allowed and at least one browser is registered, a Connected browsers list appears. Each row shows the browser name, a short code and a Remove button. Click Remove to stop alerts on that browser.

MUTE a project

  1. Open the project and click the bell icon in the project header, next to the three-dot menu (tooltip Notifications for this project). It shows a crossed-out bell when the project is muted.
  2. Under Notify me when candidates are added, switch In-app, Push and Email on or off.
  3. Projects where you changed the default appear in Settings > General > Notifications under Project overrides (“Projects where you changed the default candidate-added alerts”), where you can switch In-app back on.

SEE what is new in Scout

  1. Click the book icon in the header (tooltip What’s new) to open the What’s new panel, “The latest improvements to Scout.”
  2. Read the latest updates in the panel. Click View all updates to open the full page at /product-updates, where you can use Older updates and Latest updates to page through.
  3. Click an update’s title to read it on its own page. Back to all updates returns to the list.

If you see “Product updates are not available yet” or “No updates yet”, nothing has been published for your account.

The full release history is also in the Changelog.

What you should see

  • A bell with an unread badge, and a panel of recent notifications.
  • A Notifications card in Settings with In Scout and Desktop switches per type.
  • A desktop alert in your operating system when a type with Desktop on arrives and Scout is in the background.
